Thank You’s:

  • Thank you to all of the wonderful people who have spoken up, in, and out with the state of our country today.

Fiber Stories:

  • I knit two pussyhats out of Cascade 220 for the march, even though I wasn’t able to attend myself.

  • I knit another Hamilknit hat for a friend out of Cascade Heritage sock yarn in a cobalt blue and white.

16124293_289661338115004_3065238375842709504_n_medium2

  • I finished my first spinning since Rhinebeck: some Into the Whirled Polwarth in “Greener on the Other Side.” I did a traditional 3-ply and then chain plied the leftovers.
  • I sat down with my daughter to make her Phoebe doll out of a kit from Slate Falls Press from the book Phoebe’s birthday.pl_20170108t204431

Giveaways:

  • The winner of the Pistachio Ice Cream Shawl by Brenda Castiel (goodstuff on Ravelry) is Turbogal (Lisa). Congratulations! And thank you to Brenda for donating the pattern!
  • This week’s giveaway is a copy of the e-book, Sherlock Knits by Joanna Johnson. To enter, please leave a comment on the Ravelry thread for Episode 60!

  • Stay tuned for next episode, I will be giving away a copy of the latest collection by Susie White and Kino Knits, Point Counter Point Volume 2.

Photography Tips:

    • I received my books from Mixbook.com, both my Project Life album for 2016 and our wedding album. They turned out beautiful!!
    • I am continuing to keep up with Project Life by setting my alarm every Sunday to catch up for the week. I am mostly using the Project 52 Fresh kit as the backbone for this year, with many other kits sprinkled in there. I am using the Project Life app on my Android phone, though I could see it being beneficial to use a tablet instead.

Life Reflections:

  • I have had to limit myself on social media because of the level of intensity among people on both sides of the spectrum. What have you done to still stay active in your community and country, while still saying mentally healthy?
  • I have started to learn about hygge from the They Say Podcast. I have decided I need to create a space for myself to feel safe, and welcome others into this space.
  • I am continuing my journey in Weight Watchers, but I am looking for some family friendly recipes. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you for joining me today! We’ll recap February soon!

  • I put a few rows on my Big, Bad, Bergalong shawl “All Paths Lead Home” by Melanie Berg, but I messed up the lace right in the beginning of the second lace section. I keep trying to fudge it but I’m not yet convinced it won’t look bad.

  • On Christmas Eve I cast on a “Hamilton Ball” ornament kit by Lexicorp Knits. I finished on Christmas Day and I LOVED having a bit of Hamilton on my tree!

Sherlock Knits (paperback: $12.95) (e-book available too $10) has been released by Joanna Johnson of Slate Falls Press. My favorite patterns:

2017-01-03_0001

Photography:

I have spent a huge part of the last week putting together my photo book for 2016 using the Project Life App by Becky Higgins. Tips for using this app:

  • I chose which edition of Project Life I wanted to be my standard go-to for the year, then mixed in other fun, smaller kits for things like holidays and birthdays. For 2016 I used the Capture Life edition, for 2017 I plan on using Picturesque. I also used a lot of the Cinnamon Edition for the fall.
  • I had my husband share photos he wanted in the book to Google Photo so I can download them to my phone and use them in the book
  • I used Google Drive to upload photos from my computer that I didn’t have on my phone
  • I saved each layout on my phone and on Google Drive, just in case. I will likely get rid of these after the book comes in
  • I used Mixbook to print out the actual book. Hardcover, layflat album with a 50% off coupon was less than $100 shipped
  • I have also started 2017’s album, finishing so far the cover page and a bit of the first week. I set a reminder in my phone to go back through my photos on Sundays to get layouts done throughout the year.

I also loved the deal through Mixbook, so I FINALLY created a wedding album! I used the Vintage Florals template on Mixbook as a backbone, then used different fonts to make decals through the album.

Life:

  • Looking back:
    • I went back to work
    • I took 3 yarn trips coast-to-coast (Stitches West, Zombie Knitpocalypse, Rhinebeck)
    • I designed and released my first real grown-up pattern
    • I competed against Jasmin of the Knitmore Girls and won Stash Dash 2016
    • I joined Weight Watchers and lost 15 pounds
  • Looking Ahead
    • I do not plan on taking any yarn trips this year (unless the ZK wait list moves up 60+ spots)
    • I plan on continuing Weight Watchers, hoping to lose 20 more pounds
    • I want to become more financially responsible
    • I plan on serving my community more
    • I want to knit what makes me happy
    • I want to possibly expand my design library
    • I plan on reevaluating the podcast setup I currently have and finding a way to fit into my life better

HamilKnit – Pattern and Podcast

2016-10-28_0001

https://www.podbean.com/media/player/jng82-649e8f?from=yiiadmin

The HamilKnit pattern is live! I have recorded a podcast just for this hat to help people with tips and tricks to make this hat pattern really enjoyable.

Find me on Ravelry here and be sure to tag me on Instagram as @butterflyem4 with your projects!

Click here to find the pattern on Ravelry!

Pattern Info:

  • HamilKnit can be found for free on Ravelry. If you would like to contribute to the podcast in honor of the pattern, you can do so by clicking here.
  • HamilKnit is a fingering weight, stranded colorwork hat. While you can use any technique you like to knit colorwork, I recommend using the Philosopher’s Wool technique for the crown decreases to minimize the floats behind the work.
  • I used Cascade Heritage Sock solids from The Loopy Ewe in “Real Black” and “Limestone.” You will need approximately 35g (155 yards) of the main color, and 30g (135 yards) of a contrasting color.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Make a swatch: the gauge for this pattern is 27 st x 34 rows = 4″/10cm. The circumference is 21.5″/55cm and the depth is 7.75″/19.75cm.
  • If you would like a hat that is larger in circumference, swatch with a larger needle size and calculate what your gauge will create.
  • If you would like to add depth to your hat, add rows in between the rows of colorwork.
  • Prairie Girl Danie – knit the hat inside out to make the floats carry more easily. Danie also suggests using the Turkish provisional cast on. If you do not want to do a provisional cast on, you can use a long tail cast on and then stitch your hem to the inside of your hat.
  • Ginasetta – knit an extra 2 rows in between each of the lines of text to make the hat longer for her husband’s head
  • Jasmin from the Knitmore Girls suggested using stitch markers in between the pages of the main chart to help give references
  • Color dominance -When knitting stranded colorwork with two hands, the yarn in your left hand is the dominant yarn. When knitting Continental, the yarn that comes up from the bottom is the dominant yarn. Here is a great blog post about knitting using color dominance.
  • Listen to Hamilton while you are knitting! It makes the project so much more enjoyable!

Thank you to the following people:

  • Test knitters: Prairie Girl Danie, Jasmin from the Knitmore Girls, Candy from Paws 4 Stitches, and Kim (artsluvr)
  • Bronwyn from Knitting Pipeline (Bronwyn the Brave) for being an AMAZING tech editor
  • Many, many people who have donated to the podcast in honor of the pattern
  • Kind words and comments on Instagram encouraging me to write the pattern

  • We went to the grocery store and a “Packie Run”, then back to Jen’s house for the night. We did a bit of dressing up and I was glad to know that I don’t look good in Boxy.
  • Friday morning we met up with Jen’s mom, Diane, and Jen’s friend Emilia. We drove to Connecticut to have lunch with Commuter Knitter Jen.

  • We visited O-Wool, though I decided to hold off for awhile. I picked up some handmade ceramic buttons. We met up with Commuter Jen, Carlos and the babies!
  • Diane bought some fries and cheese sauce!
  • I met SO MANY wonderful people! Many are podcasters I have watched/listened to for a long time, and we met so many listeners! We met up with Candy from Paws 4 Stitches and she gifted me my favorite item from the weekend: a Hamilton Sock Blank wrapped in handmade Hamliton wrapping paper. And I met The Yarn Harlot!

2016-10-21_0007

2016-10-21_0008.jpg

  • After the Podcaster meetup we went to the barns to look at sheep. Then we went back to O-Wool and I bought 4 skeins of their sport weight in a sage green color. I also purchased a mug from the souveneir tent.

2016-10-21_0009

  • We headed to dinner with a large group. I felt terrible at this point, but dinner helped a lot, as well as sitting for 2.5 hours.
  • We headed back to the hotel, broke out the wine and shared all of our purchases. Then we went to bed.

2016-10-21_0010

  • The next morning we grabbed breakfast at the hotel again, then back to the festival. I wore my Water and Stone cardigan and Hamiknit hat again.
  • We went to the Leaping Llamas show. I found the Savvy Girls and sat with them during the show.
  • Michelle and I waited in line for Deep Fried Artichokes. Then I headed to Into the Whirled and picked up two braids of fiber. I thought about purchasing from Loop but decided against it.

  • I did purchase from the Dirty Water Dyeworks booth a Katrinkles sweater ornament.
  • I went back to the Blackberry Hills Farm booth and purchased 2 pounds of chocolate cormo lamb roving!
  • Amy from Hudson Valley Knits, Kristi and I got to enjoy apple cider donuts, courtesy of Lauren and Pete.

2016-10-21_0012

  • I went to the Miss Babs booth to find Michelle (looking for yarn for a poncho) and ended up purchasing one skein of yummy in a plum color to finish up my #bigbadbergalong shawl, along with 3 mini skeins to weave a scarf like the samples shown in the booth.
  • We went to the food building and I bought my husband some Rocky Road fudge. We met up with the Savvy Girls again and Melanie and I interviewed each other. We met Ysolda Teague.
  • Michelle, Kristi, Jen, Diane and I sat in the memorial garden area and ate apple crisp and looked at the leaves and knitted.

2016-10-21_0013

  • After one more pass through the barns, we decided it was time to go. The drive back to Boston was really long but it was so beautiful with the fall color and wildlife!
  • We dropped Diane off and visited her Wizard of Oz room, and packed up my roving and breakables. We got back to Jen’s house and did a Google Hangout with Danie from the Prairie Girls. Then we went to bed.
  • For breakfast we went to a local diner that is strawberry themed. Then Jen took us to the airport. Kristi and I were in the same terminal so we sat and knitted on rocking chairs.

  • My flight home was great, I finished my husband’s socks and started the new pair. My flight neighbor loved watching me weave in the ends of my husband’s socks.
  • It was a fantastic trip! We said it was once in a lifetime, but we might have to go back so all of us can be there.

Photography:

  • I didn’t get my mom’s camera before I left so I had to use my phone. I tried to pay attention to the light around me and composition. I also did an interview with Melanie from The Savvy Girls.
  • Be sure to check out the photo contests from Candy from the Paws4Stitches podcast too!

My mom used a Canon Power Shot camera (affiliate link) to capture photos of their adventures and it did a FANTASTIC job! I am hoping to take this camera to Rhinebeck with me. **Note, I didn’t end up taking it with me, but this is the latest model of the camera she used.

  • I did my first family session since I started my new job, and it was so nice to be behind the camera again. I used my Nikon D60, which is my older camera body, because my D5200 is still currently broken. I used my 18-200mm lens and my 50mm 1.8 lens for individual shots. We used the “Golden Hour” of sunlight to light the session and it turned out so beautiful. The Nikon D60 did struggle with noise in a higher ISO setting, though it still did a really great job.
